Note From The Founders: 3 Ways To Increase Your Profits By 20%

The traditional best practices for vending machine owner/operators are one-dimensional:

1) Place your machine in the highest traffic location you could find

2) Stock it only when absolutely critical (i.e. when everything is almost sold-out)

3) Use the same product mix for the next decade

This is a result of perspective. If you look at a vending machine and see only a machine then you’re not thinking outside of the box.

However, if you look at your vending machine and see a launch pad for an evolving and optimized product mix, then suddenly it becomes so much more than a machine.  Instead of a vending machine you now see an Automated Healthy Snack Store.

What is the best way to turn this new perspective on your vending machine into tangible results (i.e. more CASH?):

#1: Change Up The Items In Your Machines

This isn’t an earth-shattering revelation.  We’re sure you already know this.  But, how often do you do it? Do you track the sales of each product-type?  Even if you have tested and worked to arrive at the product mix you have now, it’s a good idea to continue to feature new healthy snacks and drinks. Variety is the spice of life!

#2: Do A Give-Away Promotion

i) Place a bright-colored sticker on the back of one of your products.

ii) Affix a flyer to the front of your machine that makes it loud and clear that if a sticker of that color is found on the back of a product, then “You Are A Winner! Go To The Front Desk To Collect Your Prize!”.

iii) Make sure the front desk has an enticing prize waiting for your customer.  Recommendations: Gift-cards, H.U.M.A.N.  Clothing, Cash, or anything else you can think of that has value!

iv) Promote your Give Away via word-of-mouth.  Chat up your regulars and they’ll spread the word for you!

If communicated well, the cost of the prize will be DWARFED by your increase in profits.

#3: Automate Your Customer Feedback

You are a marketer of healthy snacks and drinks. What is the most valuable information you need to know? The wants and needs of your customers, of course.  While taking time to talk with your customers and hold sampling events to get their feedback is very effective, you can also save time by placing  a comment box on your machine via double-sided tape or Velcro strips with a small sign that reads “Healthy Snack Request”.  Be sure to include small slips of paper and a pencil/pen.

There are many other ways to increase your profits. Take a step back and evaluate your business on a regular basis.  Think outside of the box and don’t lose sight of the most important thing: providing a high-level of service to your customers!

Yesterday was the 1st anniversary of the launch of Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move Campaign.  Even with the current political polarization in our country, it is very difficult to argue with the premise of her movement.  Yesterday Obama gave this speech in regards to the goal of her Campaign.

“One year later, Let’s Move! is far more than just a campaign.  It is so much more than just a slogan.  It’s a nationwide movement to give our kids everything they need – all the energy, strength and opportunities they need to fulfill every last bit of their potential and achieve every last one of their dreams.” – Michelle Obama, February 9th 2011.

Increasing exercise in schools is crucial

More and More People Have Joined to Support

Every day, more and more businesses, schools, community leaders, and  sports leagues are joining the first lady in her attempt to change they way we think about the health and well-being of our children.   We have begun to see a fundamental shift in the way we eat and live in every level of society.  From large corporations, to small community organizations, everyone is making a push to increase health and wellness across the country.  This is what it is all about and we could not be happier.

Some of the accomplishments from the first year of the Let’s Move Campaign include:

  • The passage of the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act, a revolutionary piece of legislature that mandates schools provide healthier options for students and requires that school vending machines must adhere to the same standard of nutrition that school lunches follow.
  • The campaign has pledged to help double the number of schools that meet the HealthierUS School Challenge.
  • Nearly 500 American communities have joined the Let’s Move Cities and Towns movement to encourage action by mayors and elected officials to adopt a long-term, sustainable and holistic approach to fighting childhood obesity.
  • The Fruit and Vegetable Alliance, the Food, Family and Farming Foundation and the United Fresh Produce Association have partnered and committed to put 6,000 salad bars in schools across the country over the next three years, making fresh vegetables a more accessible choice for children.

Michelle Obama is crushing it, and we are proud to be partners with the Let’s Move Campaign in the fight against childhood obesity.

Change The Way You Schedule Your Day

Control your schedule, don't let it control you.

Do you feel like you always run out of time during the day to accomplish what you need to get done?   Instead of just scheduling the start time of your appointments and tasks for a day, make sure you schedule the end time as well.  Without an end in sight, tasks and meetings will drag on and vacuum away your day.

This is called scripting your day, and top-achievers in every industry make sure to use this technique to eliminate wasted time and in different tasks.  It is a really easy transition to make, it pays off instantly, and it can be implemented today.

Tonight:

Before you go to bed make sure to create your script for the next day. Build your calendar out and create end times for all your activities and meetings for the following day.

Tomorrow:

This is where a mindset change must take place.  Every meeting you have tomorrow, make sure to state up front your time constraint.  It may feel awkward at first, but as you become more comfortable with the idea it will be easier to speak up and state your time limitations.  Something simple like, “I am so excited to meet with you and I would like to dive right in to the matter at hand because, unfortunately, I have another meeting in a half an hour. Let’s get started.” is not disrespectful and allows both parties to get to business.

Give it a try for the rest of the week and you will be blown away by the results.

Whereas we’d usually say “yo yo yo” to yah, today it gives me great pleasure to say “ho ho ho” instead.  Can you believe that Christmas is already here?  Wow…with all of the uncertainties of life, one thing is for certain…time only speeds up!

Holiday Season

Be your best!

Not only is the clock of life constantly ticking down, the RATE at which time evaporates is constantly increasing.  If this alone isn’t a good enough reason to crush it NOW, I don’t know what is.  Time is only spent, never gained, so don’t waste it.  Each moment we have is so darn precious…my only hope is that I’ll fully realize this statement before it’s too late.  Today is the day, this second is the second…no better time than now to make the most of our incredible existence.

In the 1st edition of the Crush It Report, we defined what it means to “crush it.”  Crushing it involves many things.  Why?  Because it’s a mind-set, it’s an approach, it’s a way to live life.  Therefore, “crushing it” touches everything in your life.  And whereas business and success are important components of life, they’re not as important as family, friendship and faith.  When compared to these things, business is secondary.  Because without friends & family to share your successes with, and without faith and belief in a larger vision than yourself, “crushing it” doesn’t mean a thing.

Double Your Productivity Overnight

You know those days when you pop out of bed feeling alert, alive, and ready for anything?  Heading to work is a breeze, and you finish up early because you were so productive.  When you get home you get ambitious and cook up a feast, which is delicious and only furthers your satisfaction with the day.  It feels great to be around people and they feel great being around you.  At the end of the day lying in bed, you think think to yourself, “wow, that was a great day”.

Wake Up!

Everyone has those days once in a while, and it is always nice.  But the question we should be asking ourselves is, why isn’t everyday like that?

If you ask any “successful” person what the most important part of their day is, you may or may not be surprised to find out the answer is usually how they wake up.  Why is this?  When you wake up, the feeling you have sets the tone for your whole day, and during this time it is up to you to determine how your day is going to play out.  Lucky for us, we can make sure to have a great day by taking some simple steps to ensure we wake up feeling great.

Before you go to sleep

The secret to a good wake up actually starts before you even get in bed.  Before you go to sleep, make sure to write down the top 3-5 things you would like to accomplish in the coming day.  Make sure to only write down your 3-5 most important tasks, any more than that will actually start to hinder your productivity, as you will feel overwhelmed.

Wake up

Immediately when you wake up, go and drink a tall glass of water.  This will not only be refreshing, but it is necessary part of jump starting your day.  After 7-8 hours of sleep, and not drinking any water, your body will be dehydrated and you will feel sluggish.

As you are drinking the water, start to go over the 3-5 things you want to accomplish during the day.  Take a few minutes to visualize the steps you need to take to accomplish them and become comfortable with them.

Get out there and move!

Begin your day as you normally would, whether that means doing some morning exercise (highly recommended), or just hopping in the shower and eating breakfast.  As you go through your routine keep coming back to these tasks and continue to visualize yourself knocking each and every one of them out of the park.

By the time you actually get to the tasks, you will be prepared and ready to “crush” them.

If your normal morning routine does not help you get in to a positive mindset, it is time to start thinking about changing it up.  You may want to start exercising in the morning, research shows that getting your blood flowing before you start your day will boost spirits and increase productivity.  It doesn’t have to be intense exercise; even a light jog or power walk will wake you up and make you feel better.

Once you find a routine that works for you, stay with it.  Your body will become accustomed to this routine and start to associate it with waking up.

Helpful Products For Operators

As you expand your vending business, you will soon realize you are taking in too much money to count by hand.  While this is a great thing, at a certain point it will become a problem for your business.  When it gets to this point, it is time to buy a currency counter.  The main thing to consider when purchasing currency counters (both coin and bill) is speed and accuracy, with accuracy being first, of course.

What Are Your Needs?

Before you make a purchase, you need to make a decision between two types of counters.  You can get a money counter that will count mixed bills (for example $5 and $1 together), or one that requires you to presort all your bills before counting.  The mixed bill counter will make your life easier, but also comes with a higher price tag.  These machines tend to last a long time so think not only about your current needs, but also what you will need in the future.

When you decide which machine you want to purchase, make sure you bring with you a large stack of cash to test the machine.  Bring 100 singles and a significant amount of $5, $10, and $20. Run these through the machine a bunch of times to make sure it counts them consistently.  If you order online, run the same tests you would run in a the store before deciding if it is worth keeping.

If you are looking for a machine and don’t really care about aesthetics, it is advisable to go with a used machine.  They will be cheaper and just as reliable.

One of the best companies out there is Cummins-Allison.  If you get to a level where you need to count large amounts of money every day, you can go with a machine called the Jet-Scan.  It is a premium machine that is both accurate and incredibly fast (also expensive).

Coin Counters

There are also many change counters and sorters out there.  The choice comes down to balancing functionality with price, as the machines will do anything from just counting, to sorting in to individual sleeves.  Do some research on your own to see what will work best for your needs.

It’s no secret the holidays are a time for giving thanks and spending time with your loved ones.  During this time of year, across the world, people show their loved ones they appreciate them by writing cards, baking cookies and giving gifts.  This is fantastic, but sometimes it is not enough to just show your closest relatives how much they mean to you.  If the year was good to you, it is also important to thank those who helped you achieve whatever success you attained over the past 12 months.  Before going on, we would like to thank YOU for being a loyal reader of the Crush It Report.

As a small business owner, chances are you have more than a few people to thank for helping your business succeed.  It is very important to thank those involved with your organization, both directly and indirectly, during the holiday season.  Not only does it provide you with goodwill for spreading the holiday cheer, but it provides your business partners with more value.  If you have been following along, providing value is the secret to being happy, wealthy & free.

In the vending world it is EXTREMELY important to thank your locations.  After all, without locations your machines would be just expensive toys for dispensing yourself snacks!  Thanking your locations will strengthen the relationship between you and your contact in your school, gym, hospital, etc.  Not only will you feel good, but it will go a long way in the future when they are looking to resign contracts or refer you as a client.

  • Healthy or healthier cookies (Ok maybe we are obsessed with health, but that is our job!)
  • Vending tokens or free product for them to give out for promotions, etc.
  • Just a hand written note…these are more powerful than you think!
  • iTunes gift cards…who doesn’t like those!

One of our HUMAN operators is baking some healthy almond butter chocolate chip cookies.  It is a great idea, and hopefully they pass the taste test!

Really there are a ton of options for gifts to give to your locations.  Creativity, and thoughtfulness are the keys to successful gift giving. It has been said many times before, but like any cliche it is only because it is true. Often it’s the littlest things in life that mean the most.

So this year, sometime during the mad rush of the holidays, make sure you give thanks to the people that have helped you and your family get to where you are today.

3 Fantastically Simple Vending Tips for Operators

Last week we mentioned that plastic bins are a very useful addition to your fresh vending business.  Having the right equipment allows you to minimize your time on your vending route, even if you only have 5 or 10 machines right now, purchasing a hand truck and some bins will make a huge difference.  As you scale up your business it gets even more important.

Three Tips

This week I wanted to expand on ways to use equipment to save time on your vending restocks.  Why is it extremely important to save time on your vending restocks?  Every minute you save on a restock is multiplied by the number of machines you have.  If you have 20 machines and you save 6 minutes per machine restock, that is an extra 2 hours you save on your route!  Little changes can make huge differences in your income and quality of life.  Here are three simple ways to minimize route time, and boost sales.

#1 Stack Your Snacks in Your Bins the Night Before You Restock

Most of your time will be saved the night before your restock, so here is a tip to make sure you are prepared for the next day.  Check your sales report to figure out approximately what snacks you will need to restock each machine, and then start stacking those snacks in a labeled bin (for each machine) based on weight.  Put your bars on the bottom, then your crackers and cookies, and finally the pop chips/kettle chips on the top.  Make a bin (or 2 or 3 bins) for each of your machines that covers everything you need for the restock.  This way when you arrive at your location you can unload your bin(s) directly on the hand truck and wheel them in to your machines.  There is no thinking involved, you just unload starting with the light snacks on top all the way down to the bars.  After you fill your machine, close your bin(s), and walk back to your car.  By preparing the night before you can save yourself from having to make multiple trips to your car.  Every extra trip you save can be spent doing something more productive, like being with your family.

#2 Park Like a Boss

This is very simple but often overlooked; make sure you park as close as possible to your machines.  This will save minutes on each end, and is especially valuable in case you need to make multiple trips.  If there are not any parking spaces close, try to negotiate a place you can pull up and unload that isn’t normally used for parking.  Saving 2 minutes every trip for years to come will be worth the initial effort to secure a good spot.

#3 Change Up For Success

Make sure you are consistently changing products in your machine.  That doesn’t mean continuously overhauling your machine selection, just add and subtract products to maintain consistent interest in your machine.  If there is always a new product for your customers to check out, they will keep coming by your machine to see what is new and your sales will increase.

Our HUMAN Operator of the Month for December is Joseph Chammas.  In addition to “crushing it” at his healthy vending locations, Joseph has earned his Raw Foods Certification from the Living Light Culinary Arts Institute.  The program he completed teaches aspiring chefs how to create health-promoting, high-energy raw food dishes that are delicious, and “gourmet”.  Joseph has both Media Mogul machines and Outdoor Snack Machines at his schools, and even sent us a video of his average day on the vending route.  Thanks Joseph, and keep up the good work!

We asked Joseph some questions about getting started with HUMAN:

1. What was the main driving factor and motivation behind you deciding to launch your own HUMAN healthy vending machine business?

I was looking for a business where I could make money while providing a positive, helpful solution.  Health is a major part of my life and while I still sell snack food, the choices are a lot better for you and a step in the right direction.

2. What do you like the BEST about being a HUMAN Operator?

I like the fact that there is little to no competition in my area for what I’m doing. It is a little challenging at first to get locations to see the light, but when they can – you have loyal locations and customers.  Working with the HUMAN team is also a great plus, as they will help you whenever you need it. If you don’t succeed neither will they.

3. What is the best piece of advice you can give to operators who are just starting out, and/or future HUMAN Operators?

Location, Location, Location.  If you can get a good location such as a school or hospital you will make money.  All good locations have machines in them already so you have to either win the next bid for the account or convince the location to go with the healthier products.  HUMAN will help you with this but make sure location is your number 1 concern; everything else is secondary.

4. What are the top 3 best-selling healthy snacks & drinks at your machines? What are your personal favorites?

In the schools, the pirates booty, BBQ pop chips and organic Apple juices are my big sellers.  I don’t really eat any snacks because I’m a raw vegan, but I crack sometimes and attack a few bags of the BBQ pop chips.

5. What does it mean to you to “Crush It” and how do you exemplify “Crushing It” in your every day life.

“Crush it” to me is to be persistent and keep on going after that school you want, or a specific location, and keep on trying to get it.   Find out what’s working for you in the business and try to duplicate it.  Schools are working for me, so now my focus is on getting more schools.  Most importantly don’t give up.  Never give up!!!

OK, so we’re WAY overdue for an update on all the amazing developments within HUMAN.

Suffice it to say we’ve been busy…

Here’s what’s been going down.

GROWTH of HUMAN

We’re growing fast!

We now have hundreds of machines in the field.

Our mission of “Helping Unite Man and Nutrition” is in full swing and we’re excited for 2011 where we expect to more than double these numbers.

We haven’t seen this level of awareness about the obesity epidemic EVER…and we’ve been in the healthy vending game since 2003.  We’re seeing more and more everyday that the time is now:  with Michelle Obama’s “Let’s Move Campaign” and Jamie Oliver’s hit show on ABC, “Food Revolution,” America has never been more aware of its obesity epidemic than right NOW.

…and that’s goooooood for healthy vending.

We also launched a grant program for schools where they can get up to $10,000 in HUMAN money grants from us.

…and the great news is, we’re now in 26 states, Canada, and soon to be Puerto Rico.  We’re also developing future master distributors in Mexico, The U.K., South Africa, Australia, India, and Japan.

Obesity is not just a problem in America!  It’s EVERYWHERE world-wide as well.  We have a big fight, and guess what?  We’re 110% up for the challenge.

Operator Success Nugget of the Week:

We just launched a HUMAN Healthy Vending business in the Phoenix area last week.  The latest report from our partner there is one of his machines hit 90 vends in one day, while some of his others are consistently averaging over 40 vends/day.   Way to go Phoenix!

New Machine Advancements

We’re just as much a tech company as we are a healthy vending company and that can best be seen in our machines and what our machines can do.  We’ve recently added some machines to our line-up as well as improve upon our existing machines.

Here are some new machines that we’ve introduced into the “HUMAN Family”.

Hot Food Machine: Cooks refrigerated full, healthy meals in 60 seconds or less.  Great for schools, hospitals, and large office buildings!

Outdoor Machine: A rugged machine built for the outdoor elements.  Great for outdoor venues!

Frozen Food Machine: A rugged machine that can be placed outdoors or indoors that serves full, frozen, healthy meals.

Gourmet Coffee Machine: A machine that grinds whole beans on the spot and serves hot beverages like gourmet coffee, mochas, lattes, cappuccinos, and more.  This machine often wins taste-tests over standard office coffee!

Other Machine Advancements:

Touchscreen vending – we’re currently developing a new version of our Media Mogul machine that has a 7” touchscreen which takes the place of the manual keypad AND allows the customer to pull up nutritional information on the fly.   In short, it’s pretty sweet.

Advanced Remote Monitoring – We now offer a suped-up remote monitoring system that TEXTS you when inventories are low, among about 40 other alerts you can set.  Other improvements include a much more robust and user-friendly back-office so you can generate reports quickly, have TRUE inventory management, and lower monthly fees.

Public Relations

A lot’s been going on in the PR front, but the most recent news is we’ve been selected by our CRM company as one of two finalists to be featured on national television in their upcoming ad campaign.  Our CRM company has over 8,000 customers and they chose us!  We’re super excited about this.  Keep your eyes peeled on TV for us.  I’ll also send you the link when it becomes available.

How To Introduce a New Product With INSTANT Feedback

Handing out samples of new products is great; unfortunately it doesn’t do much for your business unless you learn whether or not people like your product.  Gleaning useful information is often the hardest part of a introducing a new items because people who accept free products are usually hesitant to turn around and criticize what is given to them.

Fortunately we have a very simple solution to this problem, and it will not add any time to your preparation.

Essentials for a Successful Product Introduction:

  • 1 folding table
  • 1 tablecloth
  • Small paper or plastic cups (think Costco samples)
  • 2 trash cans (preferably one green can and one red can)
  • A large sign
  • A product (or products) that you want to test

Follow These Six Steps to Receive Instant Feedback on Your Product

Step #1: Determine the highest traffic period at your location. This is easy if you use your online report, just search by hour and see what time of day your machine receives the highest number of vends.  For schools it will probably be a morning or afternoon break, and for offices maybe it will be lunch or a different break.  Arrive before this time and stock whatever new product you want to try out.

Step #2: Set up your table and tablecloth next to your machine.  Make sure you are close enough to your machine for people to be able to look at the samples on the table and your products inside the glass, but also make sure you are not blocking access to the machine.

Step #3: Create a sign that explains what your goal.  Below is a sample sign you can copy.

I am giving out samples because I need your feedback.

Once you try this sample please throw away your cup in either the red bin or the green bin.

Red means: “Yuck, no way I will buy this.”

Green mean: “Yum! Please stock this product.”

Step #4: Set up your waste bins in front of your table.  Make sure to put small signs on the bins that say something like “Great!” and “Yuck!” on them.  This is will make sure even the people who didn’t read the sign will know where to throw their cups.

Step #5: Set up your product in the Dixie cups and begin handing them out.   Have a conversation with your customers and ask them for other product ideas.  Often you will get some great suggestions for products, especially from kids who are not afraid to speak their minds.

Instant Feedback

Step #6: At the end of the event just count up the paper cups in each bin and you will know what percentage of people like the product and which don’t.  BOOM, instant feedback! It is that simple.

Hint: There are a couple of things to remember, if you are going to be introducing multiple products, make sure to use different cups for each product, or better yet set up different tables with two sets of trash cans.  This will make it easier to differentiate products.

Also if you are sampling beverages make sure to serve them cold!!!!  There is a huge difference between the taste of a warm drink and a cold drink.  We can’t stress this enough. Think about drinking warm Gatorade, it is gross and not refreshing, but when it is served cold it’s the world’s most popular thirst quencher.  You want to give your product the best chance of success.

In true “Crush It” fashion, here are the 3 Deadly Myths of Entrepreneurship.

This is far too common

Myth #1:  Going into business for yourself is risky

The safest thing to do is work for a corporation where you get benefits, guaranteed vacation days, and year-end bonuses.

REALITY:  This myth can’t be farther from the truth!  If you haven’t been under a rock during our financial market turmoil in the last couple of years, you’ll know that millions of people have lost their jobs as a result of the recession and companies downsizing.  People’s “secure” jobs have been eliminated with no advance notice.  There’s no such thing as job security anymore.

Today, large corporations are decentralizing themselves.  Virtual corporations are popping up (read: people working from home), independent contractors are on the rise, and many people are starting a vending business leave the the corporate grindbehind.  Furthermore, the independent entrepreneur is a heck of a lot more nimble and far more competitive than the big, behemoth corporations that are slow to make changes.

Myth #2: It’s harder than ever for the individual entrepreneur to get ahead

Opportunity for individuals is shrinking.  Small businesses are being bought by large businesses.  Large businesses are being bought by multi-nationals.  The internet is eliminating the need for person-to-person selling.

REALITY:  Changes in tax laws and rapidly increasing technology have created the Age of the Entrepreneur and this means, going forward, the Entrepreneur has the edge over large corporations.  Home-based businesses, franchises, and solo-proprietors are one of the fastest growing segments in our economy and technology is fueling this growth.

Myth #3:  It’s tougher and tougher to become a millionaire these days

Economic recession, increased competition, and fewer, more expensive resources are hindering the growth of the number of millionaires today.

REALITY: We’re in the middle of a “millionaire explosion”!

From 1776 to 1991, 3.6 million millionaires were created in the US.  That took 215 years.

From 1991-2001 the number of millionaires DOUBLED to 7.2 million.  That only took 10 years!

You have arrived...

How many more millionaires were created from 2001-2005?  Another million.  This was despite 9/11, economic recession, and a heck of a lot of doom and gloom on the news.

In fact, over the next 10 years, we’re in a position to create another 10 million millionaires, raising the total number of US millionaires to more than 18.5 million. (that’s a lot).

Yes, the value of a million dollars today is not what it used to be back in the day…but it’s still a lot!

So, I leave you with this question:

Starting a Business and the Road to Success and Freedom

Choose Success

How badly do you want to make money for yourself?  I am talking about money that comes directly from a consumer into your pocket, without first being siphoned off by your CEO, then upper management, then your boss, before finally being doled out to you.

How badly do you want to be able to set your own schedule, work when you want to work, and stop the endless commute back and forth to the office? Do you want to take vacations when you decide it is time, instead of when it is convenient for others?

Take 10 seconds to think about this.

Now ask yourself, what would you do if someone who you respected told you he or she knew a GUARANTEED way you could become your own boss, make 3 times as much money as you are making now, and could begin working 3 hours a day – all within 3 years.

BUT it only would work if you first committed to doing 3 things that were not easy or cheap.

1. You must first sacrifice some of your free time.  Meaning that instead of working 8 hours a day you will have to work 11 hours a day for the first year, 10 hours a day for the second year, and 9 hours a day for the third year.  At the end of the 3rd year you will be able to work for only 3 hours a day.
2. You must also invest ½ of your savings before you begin.  This means ½ of everything you have saved from your current job, and ½ of whatever other investments you have on the side.
3. You must be willing to learn actively everyday for the next three years.  This means that you need to keep an open mind, be creative, and be prepared to change the way you do things if they are not working.

Would you accept this offer? Does it sound too good to be true? What if instead of being guaranteed, there was a 90% chance of success?  80% chance? 70% chance? 50% chance?

Do you think Bill Gates was completely confident that dropping out of Harvard, investing all his money in himself, and working tirelessly to create a product he didn’t even know would succeed was going to lead him become the world’s richest man?

Absolutely not.

He confesses that it was one of the hardest decisions he ever made.  He stressed and toiled about the choice before finally making a decision and choosing a new path for his life.  His parents voiced their concerns against dropping out, and even though he “loved college”, Bill Gates and Paul Allen, “wanted to be among the first to start a business to write software for this new generation of computers.  We were afraid if we waited, someone else would beat us to it.”  The rest is history.

Gates is the ultimate entrepreneur.  He found an idea he believed in, made a commitment to it by throwing away his imaginary safety net, and got started right away before someone else beat him to it.  That right there is good business.

Before anyone can be successful they need to make a choice to commit to hard work and creativity, invest in themselves, and eliminate any limiting beliefs that will hold them back.  The only difference between you and a successful entrepreneur is they have already have taken these steps a long time ago…

Mmmmmm That Value Smells Good!

Give and You Shall Receive

Last week I talked about the importance of Providing Value.  At HUMAN we voraciously believe nothing is more important than this in lifenothing!   In fact, “crushing it” is really just about being a massive value provider.  They’re one and the same.

Who are some examples of value-providers?

Great question.  Everyone knows value-providers because either they or their product is fantastic, and they’re in the public eye.  However, that doesn’t mean that in order to be a massive value-provider you have to be famous!  It’s quite the contrary.

iPAD and iPhone!

Apple

This is an example with which everyone is familiar.   Rarely will you find someone who buys a product from Apple – many times for a good chunk of money – that says it wasn’t worth the money.  Sure, people might complain about the horrible service of the iPhone, but that’s more of an AT&T problem, not an Apple problem.   In fact, people feel that the iPhone provides so much value, that they buy the product in droves despite the terrible service.

That says something about Apple.

They provide products that people are more than happy to pay good money for because in the end the customer feels they get more from the product then they put in (or in this case spend).  I certainly can’t say the same for AT&T though…they’re a value-sucker!  Or am I just a sucker for having an iPhone? Anyway….

My Cleaning Lady

None of you know her.  But she is phenomenal.  She always shows-up to my house happy, is a joy to be around, and equally as important, does a phenomenal job cleaning my place.  In a world of rip-offs, underachievers, and semi or complete scams, this is refreshing.  She takes pride in her work and kicks butt every single time.   She “crushes it” when it comes to cleaning.   I pay her between $80 to $100 each time she cleans and would gladly pay more.   She gives me more value than it costs me to get that value.   She’s just as much, possibly more so, of a value-provider in my life as Apple.

Mentor Bob

I have many mentors in my life (I think few things are more important than mentors when it comes to creating an ideal “crushing it” atmosphere around yourself).   One of these mentors is a guy named Bob.  Beyond being a blast to speak with and being one of the most hilarious guys I know (thus providing value by making me laugh and feel good every time I talk with him), he’s reliable and truly looks out for my best interest.  Sure, as a result of this I’ll always think of him first if something comes up that could help him (i.e. client referrals), but that’s not why he helps me.

He’s simply a guy who is used to giving all the value he can and because of it leads a very fulfilled life.

As human beings, we have many traits that are incredibly difficult to escape.

The Secret to Being Happy, Wealthy & Free…REALLY

I can remember the days (it wasn’t too long ago) when I would sit at my desk so scared to fail…so scared to not meet my own expectations…that I would work around-the-clock focusing on one thing and one thing only: being successful.

I was ambitious, determined, and willing to do whatever it took to reach massive success.

Working round the clock

I would constantly focus on out-smarting my competition, taking shortcuts that others didn’t see, and working harder than anyone else.Why?  Because at that time I thought being successful meant making lots of money in business which meant I’d be wealthy which meant I’d be happy and able to do whatever I wanted.

Wow was I wrong! But I wasn’t alone.  In fact, many driven people today are doing just what I’ve explained above to “get ahead” and improve their lives. And it’s not surprising.  This is what students are taught in today’s universities.  It’s the way most corporations groom their “best” people to be. I wish it wasn’t so but it’s true!

Yet there is a better way…

A way that might seem counterintuitive to what most of us have learned over the years, but that doesn’t mean it’s bad.  In fact, it’s just the opposite.  It’s really, really good.

This “new way” was taught to me by those people I’ve met in life who are the most successful, seem to be the most free, and most importantly, are the happiest.

So what’s their big secret?  It’s simple.

The secret is to approach every situation in life FIRST with the question “How can I provide value.” Seriously.  Don’t shrug this off!  It’s bigger than you realize.

So what’s value? Value is the fulfillment of a void or need in someone’s life. Many times this is a void or need that the person doesn’t even know they have! It doesn’t matter.  By eliminating that void, by fulfilling that need, you’re making that persons life better.  And remember, everything in life (even in this digital age) is about people. They’re all that matter.

Create Value....Make Money

For instance, next time you approach a business obstacle, don’t think “How can I work harder? How can I make more money? How can I…”  Don’t think about you! Think about your customer. Think about how you can provide them with a more valuable product or a more valuable service. You’ll be amazed at the results JUST from this change in mindset alone. The cash will come pouring in. Money Follows Value.

What about your relationships?  Do they work the same way?   You betcha!  Next time you meet someone, don’t think “what can this person do for me” but rather “how can I provide value for this person.”  If this relationship is in business, you’ll be amazed at how valuable that relationship turns out to be.  If this relationship is in your home (i.e. with your husband or wife), you’ll be amazed at how much more enjoyable and understanding your spouse will become.  If this relationship is a friendship, you’ll be amazed at how much deeper and fulfilling of a bond you’ll develop.   Happiness Follows Value.

In fact, I’ll take that a step further.

In my opinion… The definition of “happiness” is to “provide more value in life than you take away.”

Contemplate this a bit and let me know your thoughts.  I’ve read about the topic of happiness and contemplated its definition extensively, and to me, this is its most accurate definition.

Since this is already longer than I anticipated, I’m going to stop writing for a while.

Jim Rohn is remembered as an American entrepreneur, author and motivational speaker, but what many people don’t know is that at age 25, he had dropped out of college and was making $57 a week as a stock clerk for Sears.  It wasn’t until he attended a lecture by entrepreneur John Earl Shoaff, that he decided to change his life.  John Earl Shoaff challenged Jim to set the goal of making one million dollars.   In just six years, he made his first million dollars (this was in the early 60′s, when being a millionaire was still almost unheard of).  If anyone knows about the power of setting goals and crushing them to fruition, it is Jim Rohn. Does this quote sound familiar?  It should, because versions of this quote have been around since ancient Greece. Maybe this one will ring a bell.
