How To Find Real Food At The Supermarket

It’s A Jungle Out There….A Plastic, Artificial Jungle

One of our operators sent us this and I thought it would be appropriate to post it.  It comes from Summer Tomato, a healthy lifestyle blog.  Although it is meant to be a little bit over the top, it does resonate with anyone who shops consistently.  Finding “real food” is more difficult than it has ever been, and if the closest grocer near you is a convenience store….well then it might be impossible.

Here is your guide to finding real food in the supermarket:

Good luck!  ;)

3 Tips for Putting Yourself in a Massive Value-Creating Mindset

As human beings, we have many traits that are incredibly difficult to escape.  Some of these traits are to our advantage and some are to our disadvantage.  One of these traits that’s to our advantage is the inherent desire to repay people for what they’ve done for us (even in the vending business).  Why?  We are born with a desire to maintain equal footing and be in harmony with our surroundings.  If we’re just paying out or just taking in, that can’t happen.  Repaying is a big part of life.

We Crave Balance

If you’ve read the book Influence: The Psychology of Persuasion by Robert Cialdini, you’ll know exactly what I’m talking about.  If you haven’t read that book, do so immediately!  Not only is it a fun read, it’s dead-on and will teach you a phenomenal amount about human psychology.

Sure, some people are ok just receiving and never giving…existing in completely one-sided relationships…but that’s not most of us, and those people are never successful.  Furthermore, they’re usually miserable. Because their relationships don’t last!

That’s why the most successful vending business partnerships and the finest relationships are focused on providing value.  Because when one person provides value for the other, the other person, even if they don’t realize it, has an inherent desire or instinct to provide value for that other person.  It might not be immediately, and it may come in many different forms, but it exists, and usually will come into play.   So one party provides value to the other, then the other person repays that value with something more, and this process continues forever.  So what you have here is a spiral of constant back-and-forth value-building and great stuff. It’s amazing! This is what awesome relationships are built on.

You may be thinking “hmmm why don’t I experience these massive value spirals?”

Don’t Think About Yourself

We Still Follow Our Instinct

The answer is because you’re likely not thinking completely selflessly and wondering what you can do to provide value for another person or party.   Instead, you’re thinking about yourself. This is also an inherent natural trait of being human.  We’re survivalists! So we’re trained to think of ourselves and our families first. But if we’re able to go against the grain on this, and first think of others, we’re actually helping ourselves out more than if we just focused on ourselves from the beginning.  Weird, huh?

Does this mean that providing value is in itself selfish?  Well, that’s kind of like saying Mother Theresa was selfish because all that made her feel good and all that she loved to do was help people who were poor and sick.  She received great reward for doing her work, but I don’t think that makes her selfish.  It just makes her smart.

So be selfish, smart or whatever you want to call it.  Just provide value and you’ll be amazed at the massive value that comes back at you.

So, what are the 3 Tips for Putting Yourself in a Massive Value-Creating Mindset?

1. Keep A Notebook By Your Bed

In the morning, upon rising, write down how you’re going to provide value that day. Be specific. Who are you providing value for & how are you going to do it? Aim for at least 3 achievements of value-providing each day. At the end of the day write down your achievements and grade yourself. Go to bed thinking about the value you’re going to provide the next day. Sound silly? It works! Few things are more important in regards to success than planning, planning, and more planning.

2. Pick One Person in Your Life as Your Value-magnet

For this person, you’re going to expect nothing in return.  All you’re going to do is try to selflessly help them.   It doesn’t matter what you do as long as it’s helpful. Send them hand-written letters, refer them to potential friends or clients, buy them lunch/dinner/drinks, and expect nothing in return.

Give a Gift When Someone is Not Expecting

Do this as a test and over a period of 3 months record what happens. What comes back to you because of this? Note: Do NOT use a value-sucker as your value-magnet, because they’re worthless.  Instead, use someone you like…a business contact, a family member, a friend that you’d like to get to know better.  You’ll be amazed by the effects of this test on your life!

3. Continually Reinforce Value-providing Mindset

Do not go a single morning without listening to an audio piece, reading from a book, or watching a video that motivates you to be the most valuable person you can be. Let’s be honest.  We all can wake-up on the wrong side of the bed, and we cannot be at the top of our game all the time.   We’re weak, survival-focusing creatures.  The only way we can become strong, change habits, and live a different, more fulfilled life is by changing our habits or instincts.  This cannot be done naturally! No way…I don’t care how strong you are – it’s impossible.  The strongest and most successful people are those who realize their weaknesses and to guard against them by creating a framework and system through which they’re forced to operate.  Know that you’re weak but desire to be strong.  Use whatever you can to motivate yourself and make a habit of it.

Best in health,

Sean & Andy

How To Sell Your Value

You have decided to start your own business.

You are taking your first steps towards financial freedom, flexibility, and personal fulfillment.

You want to become a value-provider to everyone you come in contact with.

Studying Didn't Teach You How To Sell

So even though you are confident in your product and yourself, why does it feel strange?  Why does it feel like you don’t know what the next step is?  In order to provide value for others, you need to sell your product. So, why does it still feel strange trying to “sell” to others?

If it feels strange, weird, unfamiliar, etc. it’s because we don’t learn how to “sell” in school.  In school, unlike the real world, there isn’t much incentive to “sell” your work.  Instead, we are told as we progress through the education system to follow formulas for success.  “Make sure your assignment looks like this”, or “Take these classes and you will become this”.  These skills are great to learn if you plan on being a tenured University professor, but the reality is very few of us will become professors.

The majority of us will take a job in some sort of business, working 9-5 or 8-6, trying to sell a product for someone else.  A small minority of us will start our own business, and hire people to work 9-5 or 8-6 to sell our product.  I underlined sell in the last two sentences because it is the key word in business.

Whether you like it or not, every company and every person in the world is trying to sell something.  Whether you are selling cars, snuggies, self-help, or charity – everyone is selling something.  There is just one problem.

We are never taught how to sell!

Some like to think of the ability to sell as something innate, and that certain people are born with uncanny abilities to sell.  “Oh, he is great salesman, always has been”, they will say.  I am here to tell you this not the truth.  Nobody has always been a good salesperson, that’s impossible.

There are no “natural” salespeople; there are only people who have acquired an understanding of sales, and embraced it at an earlier age.

This Man Knows How To Sell!

You may ask, how can I become good at sales?

First, you must realize that sales is not a skill, it is a process.

And not only that, you must understand that every sales process is always exactly the same.

Think about every purchase you have ever made.  Why did you make these purchases?  What compelled you to buy these products?  Was there something unique and special about each product you have ever bought?

Maybe, but probably not.  More than likely you bought these products for a combination of three reasons:

Reason #1: You Loved the Product or Idea. Or at Least You Really Liked It, and It Met One of Your Needs

The first step to selling any product is to have something that someone loves (or at the very least really likes).  If you have something that people love instantly you are one step ahead of the game.  If you are selling puppies, most of your work is done for you because everyone likes puppies.  If you are selling vitamins or tofu, on the other hand, you are going to have to give people a reason to love your product.

Reason #2: You Liked the Person Selling to You and Knew They Cared

Have you found that it is easier to sell to your Grandparents, than it is it to sell to perfect strangers?  That is because they know you, they love you, and they trust you.  When you approach a stranger you would like to do business with, they must first decide if they like you, and whether or not they trust you.  Both of these elements are equally valued. They may like you or your salesperson immediately, but if they don’t know if they can trust you, chances are you won’t be doing business together.

This Is The SECRET To Success!

Reason #3: You Trusted the Company and Knew They Would be With You for the Long Haul

Why do corporations like Apple and Nordstrom spend millions of dollars building customer service networks to assist you if their product breaks, or to exchange their product if you don’t like it any more?  Because they understand people buy from companies that are honest, and companies that will stand by them in the long run.  Apple sells millions of iPods, iPads, and computers, and they realize that people continue to buy these expensive products because they know if they have any trouble with the product, it will be fixed quickly and easily.

More or less, these are the three reasons why you buy products.  No matter what the product is, if you have the money AND believe all three of these elements to be true with all your heart, you will buy the product.

This is the secret to sales!  Before you can unlock your value-providing potential, you need to understand these simple elements, and figure out how to convey each of them to your customers.

Unlocking these three elements is the key to the success of master salespeople around the world.  That is why I said earlier, “There are no “natural” salespeople; there are only people who have acquired an understanding of sales, and embraced it at an earlier age.”

If you realize that every sales process is always defined by these three elements, and you focus all your sales efforts on improving  your customer’s feeling towards each element, you will never struggle for success or to provide value to others.  And if you have been following along, you know that providing value IS success.

Healthy Vending “Operator of the Month”

Tina and Eric Woodall

This marks the first-ever Operator of The Month section of the Crush It Report.  Every month from now on we will feature operators who embody the values and hard-work we encourage at HUMAN.  Tina and Eric have 16 machines in North Carolina and have been working tremendously hard to get their business optimized. It is starting to pay off as they are learning valuable lessons while on their way to becoming healthy vending veteran operators!

Tina and Eric

1. What was the main driving factor and motivation behind you deciding to launch your own HUMAN healthy vending machine business?

We were actively looking for business opportunities that were in the health and nutrition business.  We feel strongly about helping find everyday solutions to help fight obesity, the number one preventable health crisis in this country.

The h.u.m.a.n. business model fit our secondary goals of owning a business that can be scaled into a larger business that can eventually be run passively if we choose.

2. What do you like the BEST about being a HUMAN Operator?

The snacks and drinks!  But seriously we’ve never enjoyed going to our garage so much.

The great thing about being a HUMAN operator is that we immediately started generating cash.  Even though our daily number of vends fell short of our initial estimates at some locations, our deposits were more than our weekly expenses.  Also, the more we learn and operate the business the more opportunities we see to earn more in the future.

3. What is the best piece of advice you can give to operators who are just starting out, and/or future HUMAN Operators?

If you are considering it, just do it.  There won’t be a better time to get into the market.  In my area, there is another healthy vending operator who got his business filed at almost the exact same time as me and is starting to put out some press releases.  Getting to market first to obtain a proven track record will make getting the best locations easier as healthy vending becomes more mainstream.

Secondly, evaluate how you plan on running the business and be realistic as to how it will impact your home and personal life, and possibly your career if you are starting part-time.

The first month is A LOT of work.  Unless you’ve owned or worked in a vending business before, every task you have to do is brand new.  Take the time to do it right and you’ll improve and become more efficient every day.

Also, create an organized and somewhat enjoyable place to store your product.  Spend time reading labels and sampling items that sell and those that don’t.  You start seeing the product in a different way when you combine that with knowledge of what locations sell what.

4. What are the top 3 best-selling healthy snacks & drinks at your machines? What are your personal favorites?

The best selling drinks are basic spring waters, Vitamin Water and Vitamin Water Zero.  The more popular specialized drinks would be Muscle Milk and Speed Stack.

The Pop Chips, Pirate’s Booty and Back to Nature Chocolate Chip Cookies sell well everywhere.

Personal favorites:  Kombucha, Honest Tea, and Verve

5. What does it mean to you to “Crush It” and how do you exemplify “Crushing It” in your every day life.

Well, I don’t think we’re crushing it yet, but we’re super excited about the potential of this business and unlimited opportunities!  Every day we look at the challenges ahead like eating an elephant, one bite at a time and you’ll finish it.

Diabetes Surging: Time To Fight Back

Strike Back!

We all know that diabetes is a growing problem in the US but did you know that by 2050, one in three Americans could be diagnosed with the disease? According to a recent CDC study, that statistic will be a reality if more effort is not put into prevention. Currently, one in 10 Americans has diabetes and with the population living longer, the numbers are only growing. So what can we do to help put an end to type 2 diabetes? Here are two big ways we can stay healthy and lower the nation’s diabetes rate.
1. Lower Obesity Rates

Obesity is a major risk factor for developing diabetes. In the US, about 25% of adults and nearly 30% of kids are obese. If we can lower those numbers, getting the diabetes numbers down will be much easier. Some obvious, but not so simple, ways to lower obesity include lowering body weight and increasing physical activity. In fact, if you can lower your body weight by 5-7%, make healthier eating choices and exercise 150 minutes per week, “it can reduce the development of diabetes by close to 60%,” says the director of the CDC’s division of diabetes translation, Ann Albright, PhD, RD.

2. Get Screened

Even if you are not obese you can still develop diabetes, so it’s important that you get screened. You may learn that you have what’s called pre-diabetes which means your glucose levels are higher than they should be and you are at risk for developing type 2 diabetes. Learning this early will help you manage your diet and keep on top of your glucose levels.

Tasty and Fresh

Unfortunately there are some factors that cannot be affected by diet change and exercise. Some of us are just genetically predisposed to develop type 2 diabetes. If one or both of your parents had it or if a sibling has it, you are more likely to develop it yourself. Also, type 2 diabetes is more common among non-Caucasians so it’s important that you get screened early if you are in either of these categories.

Chances are the diabetes rate will continue to rise simply due to increased population numbers but it will rise much slower if we all do our part.

Exercise, eat right and get screened. It’s time to fight back!

Help Pass the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act!

Now is your chance to make a difference for America’s children! Write a letter, call, email, instant message, tweet, or poke your local congressman. Instead of taking a stand for the health of young students, our politicians are dragging their feet.  The US House of Representatives has decided to delay the vote on the Child Nutrition Reauthorization bill.  Now it is more important than ever to voice your approval for this bill!

Here is the most recent press release from the School Nutrition Association:

House Delays Child Nutrition Reauthorization

SNA calls for swift passage during lame-duck session

National Harbor, MD (September 30, 2010) – Last night, the US House of Representatives adjourned without passing Child Nutrition Reauthorization legislation.  The School Nutrition Association, a non-profit organization representing school foodservice professionals, expressed disappointment, but called on Congress to use the days before the elections to improve on the legislation.

“School nutrition professionals across this country are working miracles every day, stretching limited funds to assemble nutritious meals that fuel our children’s school days, but in the face of rising food costs and evolving nutrition standards, school nutrition programs need additional support,” said SNA President Nancy Rice, M.Ed., RD, LD, SNS, State Director of the Georgia Department of Education, School Nutrition Division   “We can no longer afford to voice our concerns about rising rates of childhood obesity and the need to promote healthier lifestyles at school without investing in the programs that reach children in their school cafeterias each day.  It is imperative that Congress and the Administration work together to pass a strong, improved Child Nutrition Reauthorization bill.”

As Congress delays passage of Child Nutrition Reauthorization legislation, the US Department of Agriculture continues to develop updated nutrition standards for school meals.  Those revised standards are expected to require larger servings of fruits, vegetables and whole grains.  The Institute of Medicine’s recommendations for these standards acknowledges the need to increase funding for school meal programs to help meet the nutrition targets.

“America has reached a tipping point,” stated Rice.  “Many members of Congress, the Administration, the First Lady, parents and advocates nationwide have to all come together in support of expanding children’s access to healthy school meals and ensuring that all food sold at school meets nutrition standards.  We cannot let our children down.  Congress must pass an improved Child Nutrition Reauthorization bill this year.”

SNA, (http://www.schoolnutrition.org ) the School Nutrition Association, is a national, non-profit professional organization representing more than 53,000 members who provide high-quality, low-cost meals to students across the country. Founded in 1946, the Association and its members are dedicated to feeding children safe and nutritious meals.

This bill is crucial for the healthy vending industry as it essentially outlaws the sale of junk food in schools.

Why Americans Are Dying Sooner!

A couple of days ago I turned on the TV and started flipping from channel to channel, perusing all my usual suspects; ESPN, Discovery, Food Network, NFL Network, etc. I ended up watching EXTREME Pig Outs on the Travel Channel, and I couldn’t turn away.  If you haven’t seen the show, it is pretty straightforward. They travel the country looking for the biggest, greasiest, most heart-stopping meals they can find, and then they entice customers to eat them on camera.  My personal favorite was a “John Elway” 7 pound breakfast burrito that is being marketed to patrons as “larger than a newborn baby“.  I don’t know if this a play to entice those customers harboring baby eating fetishes, but whatever it is, judging by the restaurant’s business it seems to be working.  I  was consistently shocked by three things; the size of the portions, the creativity of the chefs, and the variety of the foods on the show.    The only thing that seemed to remain constant was that if you could consume the perverse amount of food fast enough, without purging, you got it for free.

I forgot about the show until today, when John received an email from one of our operators located up in Canada. The email was so visually shocking that I felt it must be reproduced on the blog.  With no further ado……Why We Are Fat.

Let’s keep working hard to get out the word about healthy vending machines!  If we have these deadly options out there, we need access to more healthy options to combat them.

Eating Healthy is Easier and More Affordable Than Ever!

Remember that old excuse we used to have about eating poorly? You know, the one where we claim it’s “too expensive” to buy the healthy stuff? Well, that excuse is going out the window because the price of healthy snacks & beverages are finally starting to compete with their junk food counterparts. This means it should be easier for us to make smarter snacking decisions, without money being a deal-breaker.

In general, healthier foods still cost a little more, but keep in mind that you’re paying for a higher quality product with REAL ingredients and nutritional substance. As more and more people are hopping aboard the healthy movement, we are starting to see a positive transition in both company and consumer priorities. Many companies are working to deliver healthier products to consumers and, in turn, we are willing to spend more on foods that we know are better for us.  That being said, affordability is becoming a non-issue and our accessibility to healthy food options is growing. Hooray!

Just look around at the grocery store — Take a stroll down the snack aisle. There are so many more delicious and healthy products now and, best of all, it won’t break the bank for us to bring them home. A lot of companies have even improved their existing products to have better ingredients, without affecting the price.

Still, there is way too much junk food out there and many of us are in the habit of turning to these products out of impulse and familiarity. We need to work on that. There are so many healthy alternatives out there to satisfy every craving, flavor, and texture that your tummy could desire. You just have to make the right choices, break your old habits, and commit to snacking smarter. It will benefit everyone, especially yourself.

Here’s a quick scenario:

You’ve got a buck in your hand, and a nagging hunger pang. You walk over to the nearest food source, a typical traditional vending machine. Hmm, what to choose? Well, there are greasy potato chips, fried corn chips with additives, snack crackers with chemical preservatives, candy bars full of high fructose corn syrup and refined sugars, fruit snacks with artificial flavors and dyes… you get the idea. Is this really what you want to spend your hard-earned money on? It may only be $0.75, but it’s still a poor investment. Don’t give this vending machine your money! Your health will be paying a lot more down the road if you choose to consistently eat from here.

Do this instead:

Take your money to 100% healthy vending machines (these guys are popping up everywhere!). Their products might be priced a little higher, but you’ll get premium, equally tasty (if not tastier) natural snack options like baked pita chips, gourmet rice puffs, fruit & granola bars, etc. that you can feel good about eating. H.U.M.A.N. Healthy Vending is even launching a $1 machine, stocked completely with 100% healthy items that will only run you a buck! Now that’s making your dollar count.

Times, they are a changing! Upgrade your eating habits, and get it out of your head that “healthy” is synonymous with “expensive.” You don’t have to settle for junk food anymore, and you don’t have to spend a lot to get a lot. Healthy eating is not a privilege, it is your right!

A Trip to the Vending Machine = Walking the Plank?

“Bill rubbed his eyes from the glow of his monitor.  It was 3:00 p.m. on a Monday and he was TIRED.  Slammed with meetings, reports, and an endless barrage of emails, Bill had barely had time for lunch (a quick trip through the McDonald’s Drive-Thru).  He stood up, stretched, and stepped into the hallway to walk down to the vending machines for some much-needed energy.  As he entered the hallway he was surprised to see his co-workers jeering and yelling at him.  His boss grabbed his hands roughly and pulled them behind his back, tying them together with mailing tape.  He felt the sharp poke of scissors in his back. ‘Forward, wench! You did a poor job swabbing the poop deck, and now you must walk the plank! YARRRR!!!’”

While this may be a slight exaggeration of how the typical walk to the vending machine goes, in reality each step you make towards that can of soda might as well be a walk towards the edge.  Bill learned his soda habit in school, and kept with it his whole life…and he is not alone.

Here’s some soda facts, me maties:

  • Americans drink more soda pop than ever before.
  • Soda accounts for more than a QUARTER of all drinks consumed in the U.S.
  • More than 15 BILLION GALLONS were sold in 2000, and its only increased since then.
  • 15 BILLION GALLONS works out to at least one 12-ounce can per day for every man, woman, and child!
  • Soft drink consumption rates have doubled in the last decade.
  • Soft drinks are the leading source of added sugars in the average American teenager’s diet, equaling 15 to 20 teaspoons of added sugar per day!
  • Adolescents (ages 11-17) get 11% of their calories from soft drinks!
  • Drinking soda replaces nutritious drinks like milk, leading to decreased calcium consumption in girls. (One result: osteoporosis)
  • A Harvard School of Health study determined that in 9th and 10th graders, those who drank soda regularly were THREE times more likely to develop bone fractures.
  • For every soft drink consumed per day, the risk of obesity goes up by 50%

YARRRRRRRR! These kind of facts make really SHIVER ME TIMBERS. I honestly have no clue what that means. But, I think it has to do with the vibrations running down a pirate’s wooden peg leg from angry convulsions.

Anyway, its obvious that soda is horrible.  But kids have few options at school, and when they’re thirsty, THEY’RE THIRSTY! And when they want to snack on junk food, who is going to stop them? The solution? First off, replacing junk food and soda vending machines with healthy snack and drink machines.

A possible objection: Won’t the school will lose money? Answer: FALSE. North Community High School in Minneapolis replaced most of its soda machines with machines stocked with fruit juices and water and their sales INCREASED.  Other schools across the nation (Miami, Washington D.C., North Carolina, etc.) are already replacing their food AND drink machines with premium, high-tech 100% healthy vending machines.

Yar.

The New Era of Mean, Green, Vending Machines!

Some things never change: Donald Trump’s hair, the Cubs’ chances of making it to the World Series, and until now: vending machines.  When I think of vending machines I think of brown boxes with coils dispensing chips, cookies, and candy.  Apparently I’m living in the past, because the once stagnant industry of vending is being revamped for the 21st century.  Heavily influenced by global concerns of energy waste, obesity, and malnutrition, the brown box is soon becoming a thing of the past.

Vending machines are generally overlooked as something detrimental to a workplace,  school, or gym.  After all, the store is too far away and these people need to snack! Heck, we’ll just plug it in, sign the contract, and everyone will be happy! This is the kind of short-sighted thinking that can have negative long term effects.

Let’s take a look at some of the negative impacts the traditional junk food vending machines have:

  • Energy consumption: A refrigerated vending machine can consume between 2,500 and 4,000 kilowatt-hours  per year.  To give you some perspective, in 2008 the average home consumed around 11,000 kilowatt-hours.  So if those 3-4 vending machines at work could power your home for a year! The good news: new eco-friendly vending machines now use 50% less electricity!
  • Product mix: traditional vending machines contain nothing but junk food.  Its no news flash to anyone that the U.S. and the world as a whole is struggling with the rise of obesity and its associated negative health impact.  28 out of 50 states have reported an increase in the percentage of obese people, and childhood obesity is one of the greatest threats to the next generation. The good news: healthy vending machines are steadily being placed in schools, gyms, and office buildings worldwide!
  • Education: traditional vending machines give no indication as to the nutritional content of their foods.  You can’t bust the glass and read the label! Consumers then rely on what tastes good, which to the average person is unfortunately some type of sugary or salty snack with little to no nutritional value.  The good news: New, high-tech vending machines with large LCD displays and on-board personal computers power an interactive snack buying experience for the consumer.  Nutritional content is now at the touch of a button!

Maybe that’s what the Cubs need: healthy vending machines in their training facility! It would explain a lot…Don’t hate on me, Chicago, I’m just trying to help.
