The countdown has begun: 71 days remain.

As schools race to comply with the USDA’s Smart Snacks In School rules with only 71 days before the July 1st deadline, the media is taking notice.

What Are the Smart Snacks In School Rules?

The Smart Snacks In School rules require all schools that accept assistance from the National School Lunch Program revamp their offerings in student stores, a la carte lunch lines, fundraising and school vending machines to reflect the standard’s limits on calories, sugars, fats, and sodium while meeting the requirements on ingredients such as whole-grains, fruits, vegetables and dairy products by July 1st, 2014. For a quick explanation of the rules’ details, check out this video:

What’s the News?

Last week, Fox 59 in Indiana reported on the upcoming rules and what parents have to say about them. From the segment: “‘I think that’s great!’ said Betsy Hunsucker, a Brownsburg mother. ‘I think kids would love fruits and vegetables.’”

Not only are the rules gaining traction in local media outlets, but also the director of nutrition policy at the Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) Dr. Margo Wootan recently commented on the firm nature of the deadline:

“Schools are required to begin implementing the Smart Snacks standards on July 1. An “interim” final rule gives USDA the ability to make adjustments to the standards as needed down the road, but an interim final rule is the law. It’s not optional. It does not mean that schools can choose not to implement the standards. Many schools already have implemented nutrition standards for competitive foods through state and local policies, showing it can be done.”

What Should Schools Do?

Schools should start integrating Smart Snacks-compliant snack options now in order to ensure that by the deadline passes, they won’t be facing potential fines.
