Burger King, the world’s second-largest hamburger chain introduced a bacon sundae as part of its new menu items for the summer today! As if America doesn’t already have enough food abominations, thanks to BK, we can add another one to the list. Oh, and in case you were wondering, it’s fully loaded with 510 calories, 18 grams of fat, and a whopping 61 grams of sugar. That much sugar is equivalent to the sugar content of six Krispy Kreme glazed donuts! What’s worse is that I could not find the sundae’s official ingredients online. An educated guess tells me it includes BK’s general soft-serve/shake mix, which includes, of course, high fructose corn syrup and words no one but a food scientist could pronounce.

We know that poor eating habits are causing a number of preventable diseases across the United States, so I am a bit confused why BK would take this route when, earlier this year, it rolled out an expanded menu with healthier farefruit smoothies, wraps and saladsand an advertising campaign featuring soccer star David Beckham.

We also know that Michelle Obama has made healthy eating one of her main campaigns as First Lady – in fact, she just published a book about it called, “American Grown: The Story of the White House Kitchen Garden and Gardens Across America.” Somehow I don’t think this is what the First Lady had in mind. On another note, the timing of this launch could not be more ironic!  I almost wonder if this wasn’t Burger King’s rebuttal to New York City Mayor, Michael Bloomberg’s, proposal to decrease sugar consumption by banning super-sized drinks at fast food restaurants, stadiums, bodegas and movie theaters.

So the next time you stop and ask yourself, ”why do Americans have so many chronic health issues?” I think a good answer would be because fast-food chains create and market dessert atrocities like sundaes sprinkled with fried pork!
