Living Large When It’s a Small World

Disney is currently facing a media frenzy given its recent anti-childhood-obesity campaign exhibit at Epcot Center in Florida, which many health professionals say used shame tactics, weight prejudice and, clearly, poor judgment in its effort to educate children on how to acquire healthy habits.

Disney’s exhibit, called “Habit Heroes,” is a joint effort with Empire Blue Cross Blue Shield who invested millions of dollars in the campaign, which opened earlier this month. The exhibit is now closed and its accompanying website is under maintenance indefinitely.

“Habit Heroes” featured the cartoon superheroes Will Power and Callie Stenics, a fit team who help children fight villains named Lead Bottom (whose description reads: “Blubbery loves company”) and The Glutton, whose “crimes” include inactivity and binge eating.

While Jennifer Fickley-Baker, social media manager of the Disney Parks blog is reported to have said the exhibit’s purpose is to “[encourage] children of all ages to learn healthy lifestyle habits and become more active,” several health professionals and organizations have spoken out in disapproval of the exhibit.

Some of exhibit’s more vocal opponents include The Binge Eating Disorder Association, National Association of Anorexia Nervosa and Associated Disorders, a chair of the Canadian Obesity Network, professors including Rebecca Scritchfield (an adjunct at George Washington University), dietitians including Julie Duffy Dillon, and author and activist Marion Nestle.

Yoni Freedhoff, the Canadian Obesity Network’s family medicine chair and author of the blog, Weighty Matters, said, “There’s no doubt in my mind that overweight and obese kids going through this exhibit are leaving feeling horrible about themselves” [source].

In her article in the Huffington Post yesterday, author and magazine editor Sunny Gold wrote, “We all want kids to be healthy. But, as study after study has shown, shaming doesn’t promote healthy weight loss, it promotes eating disorders. Which, not coincidentally, are on the rise in this country, right along with obesity.”

Coincidentally, this week is National Eating Disorder Awareness Week.

What do you think? Do you think Disney missed the mark with its characterization of healthy habit superheroes and the villains they have to fight? What kind of message does this send to children, no matter their size?

HUMAN Healthy Vending Shreveport LA

The Definition of “Crushing It”

Shreveport, LA Operator Donnie Hudson Strikes Gold

3 Days Worth of Money Collected from Donnie Hudson's Healthy Vending Machines

With anything in life, you have two choices: take initiative, or wait for an opportunity come to you. For Donnie Hudson, the latter was never an option.

After attending the HUMAN Business Building Bootcamp (HB3) in October, Donnie didn’t waste any time locking down the best locations to place his healthy vending machines. He used the tools he learned at HB3 to target (and secure) specific locations in the Shreveport, LA area.

How did he do it?

Donnie pounded the pavement the moment he got back to Shreveport. With his energy from HB3 still pumping through his veins, he went to every potential location and dropped off a bag of sample healthy vending snacks. While he was there, he built a rapport with the decision makers and set meetings. Essentially, Donnie kickstarted the LDA process by taking initiative.

Talk about having a passion for your business! Just this past week alone, Donnie has experienced MASSIVE success at his newly-launched machines.

“Yesterday (Dec 30) I averaged 45 vends per day across my machines,” Donnie reported. “They had a basketball game at Calvary and my machine was emptied! Plus, the Broadmoor YMCA has been unreal. I had 35 vends yesterday and averaging just under 20 per day. I cannot wait until next week when Byrd [High School] comes online! Just wanted to share the good news, this is just an awesome experience!”

Two days later, Donnie reported even more crushing stats. On his first day of operation at Byrd High School, his machines had 115 vends by noon. At the end of the day, his machines had 240 vends. Not to mention, the students only get to use the machines during two different 30-minute lunch periods!

Overall, 2 of Donnie’s healthy vending machines are doing between 130-140 vends a day each, and another 2 are doing 100-110 vends a day each.

Way to go, Donnie! It just goes to show how having a passion for your business and a drive for success can amount to monumental results. By taking initiative and harnessing the energy and knowledge learned from HB3, Donnie was able to take Shreveport by storm.

Napoleon Hill on Personal Initiative

How to Aim for Success Above Mediocrity

Check out this classic video from Napoleon Hill, author of one of the most influential books in history, Think and Grow Rich:

As Hill says, “If you aim for success above mediocrity, you will need to learn to act on your own personal initiative, because your success is something which you must achieve for yourself without someone telling you what to do or how to do it.”

Taking initiative is extremely important. It separates the greatest successes from everyone else. Those who get ahead most rapidly are those who promote themselves to a higher place in life by acting on their own personal initiative.

Taking initiative gets you places you could never get by waiting for things to happen. Every day we have a choice: to actively create our destiny, or let our destiny be created for us.

Carpe Diem! Sieze the day!

HUMAN Healthy Vending Location Reviews: Northwest YMCA

HUMAN Healthy Vending Reviews: Northwest YMCA

Associate Member Services Director Gives the Scoop

When you think of a YMCA, would an unhealthy lifestyle come to mind? Absolutely not!

So why is it so many YMCAs offer junk food from vending machines?

Check out what Keith Marin has to say about his experience with healthy vending machines:

Keith Marin, Associate Member Services Director at Northwest YMCA in Cupertino, CA, knew there had to be a change. The traditional vending machines carried anything from Cheetos to Oreos. The members didn’t even like the food offered! So, when Northwest YMCA made the transition to HUMAN Healthy Vending machines, the members loved it! The first think people asked was, “why didn’t you get this in here earlier?”

The kids and members love the machine, due to its product variety and technological “coolness” of the machine. It’s a fun purchase that offers an experience behind it.

Marin places a lot of importance on teaching kids the benefits of healthy eating/healthy lifestyles. If you start teaching them early, you’re setting a good foundation for their entire life. What you put in is what you get out, so if you are eating junk food, you will only get a junk in return (physically and mentally).

Northwest YMCA is a pioneer in the healthy vending movement. With 5 million junk food machines in the country, Northwest YMCA is making a proactive decision that will benefit the lives of their members.
