HUMAN Healthy Vending Buffalo NY

NFL Player-Turned-Social-Entrepreneur Tackles Obesity Crisis

Buffalo Bills Player, Jon Corto, and His Wife, Jen, Launch Wellness Day Event at Orchard Park Middle School

Last Tuesday was an exciting day for the Buffalo, NY area. Nearby Orchard Park Middle School hosted a Wellness Day, and celebrated with a new HUMAN Healthy Vending machine!

Buffalo Bills Safety Jon Corto and his wife, Jen, launched a sampling event during Wellness Day. Baskets of healthy snacks and drinks were provided to the students. The event couldn’t be more successful.

Even the local news stopped by for a visit. CBS affiliate WVIB featured the sampling event on the nightly news along with a news article. Jon Corto was interviewed about Orchard Park’s new vending machine, pointing out the differences between what students think healthy food tasted like and what it actually tastes like.

“You’re not getting all the processed food, the synthetic stuff, you’re getting wholesome stuff. We don’t say you can’t eat cookies, but if you’re going to eat them, be smarter about it” said Corto.

Check out the news clip:

A big focus was on the LCD screen attached to the top of the machine, which can provide nutritional information to students. The LCD screen is a fun, attractive way to teach students the importance of healthy eating, and can even encourage them to read food labels. It’s one thing to place a healthy vending machine and tell students to eat healthy; it’s another thing to educate them as to why they need to eat healthy. Starting nutritional education young is the best way to create lifelong health and wellness.

Not only that, the machine has been a smash hit at Orchard Park Middle School. According to Principal Dave Lilleck, the machine has been selling out on a daily basis.

Congrats, Jon and Jen, for such a successful event!

What’s Wrong with What We Eat?

New York Times Food Writer, Mark Bittman, Weighs in on What’s Wrong With What We Eat

It’s no secret that we’ve got a BIG problem. With the plethora of fast food joints densely populating the country, it really is no surprise. However, this is only part of the problem.

So, what’s wrong with what we eat?

Mark Bittman, food writer for The New York Times, dives into the issue. He narrows it down to a few main points:

1) Too much meat

2) Too few plants

3) Too much fast food

4) Too little home cooking

Check out the video below to learn more about it:

Bittman makes a powerful comment--we aren’t born craving donuts and Whoppers. So why is it Americans love them so much? A lot of it has to do with marketing. It’s time to change the focus from junk to health, and it’s up to us to demand healthier products in our homes, schools, and workplaces.

This isn’t just a national issue; it’s a global issue. Our habits are putting the entire planet at risk. So where do we go from here? It’s a simple formula:

Eat less junk and more plants. Eat food. Eat real food.

CNN Money 10 “Generation Next” Entrepreneurs to Watch

HUMAN Co-Founder Sean Kelly Named One of CNN Money’s 10 “Generation Next” Entrepreneurs to Watch

HUMAN Co-Founder Sean Kelly next to a HUMAN machine

We have an exciting update for all of you! HUMAN Healthy Vending’s Chief Humanist, Sean Kelly, was just named one of CNN Money’s 10 “Generation Next” Entrepreneurs to Watch.

This is great recognition for all of us here at HUMAN, and YOU. Without our amazing operators, fantastic locations, fans, and customers, we would not be the company we are today.

The article describes Sean’s story, from the “Aha Moment” he had when he first envisioned healthy vending, to his partnering with Stanford MBA, Andy Mackensen, four years ago.

It’s not often you hear of success stories like ours in a time of economic crisis. When most companies are letting go of their employees to cut costs and stay afloat, we are fortunate enough to be HIRING people.  We recognized an urgent need to fight obesity and malnutrition, so we created a solution. There is another crisis in this country that does not involve money. It involves people. It is our mission to create healthier people, one vending machine at a time.

Again, we say THANK YOU for making healthy vending such a success.

 7 Steps to a Culture of Innovation

How Tackling Problems with Creative Thinking Will Set You Up for Success

We live in a hustling-and-bustling society. Everywhere you look, there are millions of companies competing for our business. We are instantly connected with smart phones, portable computers, webcams, and social networking. It’s no secret the world has drastically changed with the advent of new technology and innovation. Just compare your life now to ten years ago. Pretty crazy, huh?

In the 21st century, creativity is the new currency. It is the one thing that can’t be outsourced. The most rapidly growing businesses are the most creative. Apple, Facebook, Groupon…all of these are successful because they created something completely different than what we’ve seen before. Creativity is what sets them apart from the rest.

Most companies fail to foster their creativity. They underestimate the value of original thinking and imagination. For a company to succeed in today’s day and age, creativity must be developed on all levels of the organization.

Inc. Magazine recently explored this topic by creating the 7 Steps to a Culture of Innovation:

1. Fuel Passion

We are the first to say that passion is EXTREMELY important to our healthy vending franchise. We founded our business because we are passionate on aiding people to choose healthier lifestyles. Every great invention began with a burning desire to change people’s lives.

With a team full of passion, you can achieve almost anything. Without it, you have nothing.

It’s important to realize, though, that passion alone does not equate to success. That passion must be turned into a purpose. Like our motto states, passion + purpose + philanthropy = success. Having an important purpose will create more passion among your team to fulfill that purpose.

2. Celebrate Ideas

Ideas are interesting. You have good ideas and bad ideas, and it’s mostly a subjective matter. However, praising good ideas will help foster creativity. Recognize someone when they deliver a good idea. Reward them with praise, perks, and career opportunities.

If you want a creative team, you need to establish an environment that rewards creativity.

3. Foster Autonomy

People like to be able to call their own shots. We want to be able to think on our own and do things on our own. Independence is a societal attribute socialized in us at an early age. An employee who has to run every single detail by his or her boss for approval quickly loses any interest in creative thinking.

Granting autonomy means extended trust, and that means some decisions will be made that you wouldn’t have made  yourself. It is important to deliver a clear message as to what your expectations are. Let your team members know you are behind them and value their judgment and creativity. Your team will be more motivated and confident to do their best work.

It’s a win-win situation.

4. Encourage Courage

Encourage your team members to stand up for what they believe is right, even if it’s controversial. Not everyone will agree on every issue your company faces. Encourage people to disagree and let them explain why. They probably will bring up a problem you never considered.

If you allow your team to be open and honest when it comes to making decisions--whether it be mundane administrative issues or the next huge product launch--you will create a culture of free-thinkers.

5. Fail Forward

We’ve discussed this before, and the message is still the same. Don’t be afraid to fail. Failure will happen, but the trick to success to is fail fast and fail cheap. Once you fail, recognize what needs to be done quickly and move on. Don’t let failure extinguish creativity and innovation.

Failing forward means “taking risks and increasing the rate of experimentation…some bets will pay off; some will fail.” Every minute counts in business. The best businesses test out a lot of ideas and let the failures go quickly without remorse.

6. Think Small

Most of the time, it is important to always keep in mind the big picture of whatever you are doing. However, bigger is not always better. Bigger companies often have more red tape, corporate bureaucracy, and a greater lost in translation ratio. Smaller companies tend to have the opposite qualities. They tend to be “more curious and nimble.” They have a stronger sense of urgency and a higher propensity to embrace change.

This doesn’t mean that big companies only think big and small companies only think small. It is important for everyone to think small. Don’t nurture old ideas and protect them from the wild because you are afraid they will be eaten alive. Create new ideas and establish urgency. The half life for great ideas is minuscule, so drop them like it’s hot.

7. Maximize Diversity

Diversity is crucial to any successful business because it creates different perspectives. That means more creative outlets, different specializations, and a vast array of knowledge.

The magic of diversity really happens when these diverse perspectives come into contact with each other to create something new. This “melting pot” approach to business drives some of the most creative company cultures.

My Vending Route: HUMAN Employee Runs Profitable Vending Route

My Vending Route

After working with HUMAN for nearly a year and a half I have learned a TON about the vending industry. I have worked within the HUMAN team playing many roles including freight and machine installation logistics, marketing, sales, customer service, and administrative work.  I have also played an integral part in putting together machine instructional manuals and videos for our partner operators.   Flying around the country with the HUMAN CEO conducting location acquisition campaigns.  Running a business takes hard work, persistence, resilience, and most importantly a positive attitude!

What else could I possibly dive into at HUMAN?  Real world, in the field, vending operations!!  Taking my skills from learning about the vending machines at our warehouse in to the field.  After operating a machine at the Shalhevet School in Los Angeles for two weeks, here is what I have learned:

- You won’t know EXACTLY what the customers at your location will like best until you have a week or two under your belt (usually takes 30-90 days for total optimization). I learned quickly that some products did not move as fast as I’d like. What did I do about it? Got those specific products out of there! I then asked the students what THEY wanted to see instead, and Boom, 2 rows of the new product were both sold out the next day!

- Be 100% clear on what you are allowed to offer! At this specific location (a Jewish School), we are offering an all Kosher product mix. We did our due diligence, found some great kosher products, only to find out that some of the drinks and snacks did not meet their standards. Because of this, the administration actually unplugged the machine TWICE on separate days so the kids would not buy anything!  I headed over to the school immediately and sat down with the administration to see how we could get on the same page…sure enough, they printed out all of the acceptable Kosher signs and the product mix is now totally dialed in.  However, I probably missed out on 30-50 vends from this mistake…that’s cash out of my pocket!!

- Give out samples!!! Don’t be cheap here…I probably gave out 50 snacks and drinks and now have a group of kids who support the program and are happy to buy product.  You should see the smile on these kids face when I am filling the machine and they ask “Can I get a bag of chips?” and “I say sure, what free drink do you want with that?” Simple things like this ‘buy 1 get one 1 free’ tactic when you’re there for 30 minutes filling the machine can pay off HUGE.

- Pre-kit your products the night before. I usually spend an hour each night putting the right products into my containers to get ready for the next day. Doing it this way allows me to head over to the school and not have to worry about scrambling to get product together during my busy work days…business hours are for high-value tasks…do this kind of stuff when you’re hanging out, watching football, or in between sets of your at-home workout!

STATS December 6th -- December 16th:

InOne Technologies (a HUMAN partner) Sales Report Summary

This is a screen shot of sales from December 6th -- December 16th. Keep in mind that the school was not open on the weekend, there was a half day of school on Friday Dec. 10th, and they unplugged the machine twice in the middle of the day (losing at least 4 hours of prime time vending). We are looking at 9 days worth of sales!  These 414 vends equates to and avg. of 46 vends per day!

STACKS:

Yes, I took a picture of my money. I like money!

This is what 10 days of vending looks like at 46 vends per day! This does not include the huge bank bag of change I have.  No, they are not all twenties, but there are a lot plus some ones ; )

Help Pass the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act!

Now is your chance to make a difference for America’s children! Write a letter, call, email, instant message, tweet, or poke your local congressman. Instead of taking a stand for the health of young students, our politicians are dragging their feet.  The US House of Representatives has decided to delay the vote on the Child Nutrition Reauthorization bill.  Now it is more important than ever to voice your approval for this bill!

Here is the most recent press release from the School Nutrition Association:

House Delays Child Nutrition Reauthorization

SNA calls for swift passage during lame-duck session

National Harbor, MD (September 30, 2010) – Last night, the US House of Representatives adjourned without passing Child Nutrition Reauthorization legislation.  The School Nutrition Association, a non-profit organization representing school foodservice professionals, expressed disappointment, but called on Congress to use the days before the elections to improve on the legislation.

“School nutrition professionals across this country are working miracles every day, stretching limited funds to assemble nutritious meals that fuel our children’s school days, but in the face of rising food costs and evolving nutrition standards, school nutrition programs need additional support,” said SNA President Nancy Rice, M.Ed., RD, LD, SNS, State Director of the Georgia Department of Education, School Nutrition Division   “We can no longer afford to voice our concerns about rising rates of childhood obesity and the need to promote healthier lifestyles at school without investing in the programs that reach children in their school cafeterias each day.  It is imperative that Congress and the Administration work together to pass a strong, improved Child Nutrition Reauthorization bill.”

As Congress delays passage of Child Nutrition Reauthorization legislation, the US Department of Agriculture continues to develop updated nutrition standards for school meals.  Those revised standards are expected to require larger servings of fruits, vegetables and whole grains.  The Institute of Medicine’s recommendations for these standards acknowledges the need to increase funding for school meal programs to help meet the nutrition targets.

“America has reached a tipping point,” stated Rice.  “Many members of Congress, the Administration, the First Lady, parents and advocates nationwide have to all come together in support of expanding children’s access to healthy school meals and ensuring that all food sold at school meets nutrition standards.  We cannot let our children down.  Congress must pass an improved Child Nutrition Reauthorization bill this year.”

SNA, (http://www.schoolnutrition.org ) the School Nutrition Association, is a national, non-profit professional organization representing more than 53,000 members who provide high-quality, low-cost meals to students across the country. Founded in 1946, the Association and its members are dedicated to feeding children safe and nutritious meals.

This bill is crucial for the healthy vending industry as it essentially outlaws the sale of junk food in schools.

USDA MyPyramid Partners: Working to Combat Obesity and Promote Nutrition!

Whenever I hear “USDA,” I automatically think of steak. Does that happen to anyone else? Well, if you’re like me, you should remind yourself that the USDA is not just a grader of meat; it is an executive department of the U.S. government! This department is responsible for developing and regulating federal policy on farming, agriculture, and food. With healthcare concerns at the forefront of our minds and an obesity epidemic on the rise, they’ve got their work cut out for them. So what are they doing to keep these issues in check? I’m glad you asked.

The Center for Nutrition Policy and Promotion was established, under of the Department of Agriculture, to focus solely on improving the nutrition and well-being of our nation’s people. The organization’s main objectives have been to:

  1. Advance and promote dietary guidance to all Americans
  2. Apply sound research and analysis toward assessing the nutritional needs of the public

Before the creation of this agency, consumers were subjected to conflicting, and many times inaccurate, nutritional messages. Fortunately, with the American public becoming increasingly educated about the importance of diet, the call for regulated information was answered.

One of the initiatives administered by the CNPP was updating the Food Guide Pyramid of the ’90s. This outdated model was replaced by the MyPyramid Food Guidance System, which personalizes nutritional recommendations into the appropriate combination of food groups, on an individual basis. The new system also acknowledges the importance of physical activity, variety, moderation, and proper proportions, incorporated into a healthy diet.

In the summer of 2008, MyPyramid Alliance was launched. Since it’s inception, the program has partnered with over 200 corporations and non-profits to make a positive difference in the health of America. Partners include Goliaths, General Mills and Kraft, national organizations such as Girl Scouts of America and YMCA, and  lesser-knowns like H.U.M.A.N. Healthy Vending and ‘nPLAY who are committed to fighting childhood obesity and improving our nation’s standards of nutrition.

Partnering with MyPyramid Alliance provides opportunities to promote messages of health and nutrition, combat childhood obesity, and educate communities about the Dietary Guidelines for Americans. Check out what it takes to become a partner, and support the companies and organizations who are already involved!

Hurry Up, Senate! The Healthy Eating Community is Waiting for the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010!

Yesterday the good news for parents and schools hoping for healthy eating for America’s youth was that H.R. 5504 (a.k.a. the “Improving Nutrition For America’s Children Act”) passed in the House of Representatives.  Now it faces the Senate and the issue of whether funding can be approved ($10 billion over 8 years!).

There’s ANOTHER bill on the radar as well, in case you didn’t know: H.R. 3307 (a.k.a. “Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010). This bill is chock-full of improvements needed to be made to continue and improving the National School Lunch Program and for healthy eating in schools in general.  This bill is on the Senate’s calendar, but may not get approved this week before the month-long recess.

Seriously, Congress? A month-long recess? That’s what the fat kids of America need, NOT YOU!

President Obama’s original request for funding ($10 billion) for improvements in Child Nutrition fell short for H.R. 3307 when it went through the Senate Agricultural Committee: passing with funding being approved so far for only $4.5 billion.  I’d supply the rest but my private jet is in the shop and I just ordered a new platinum grill for my MOUTH.

The Senate needs to get its act together ASAP. Want to see how awesome this bill is? Check it out:

  • $20 million in grants provided for Summer Food Service Program expansion.
  • Increases the number of Summer Food Service Program sites.
  • Child and Adult Care Food Program expands suppers to all 50 states.
  • Foster children made automatically eligible for free school meals.
  • Elimination of paper applications which makes access easier
  • Mandatory funding for pilot projects that will provide nutritious food to hungry children.
  • Increases the federal reimbursement rate of school meals by 6 cents per meal.
  • Provides funding for farm-to-school programs.
  • Expands WIC certification to 12 months.

How is this different from H.R. 5504? Both bills take much-needed steps towards expanding outreach to more children and providing more accessibility to healthy food options.  Both bills have measures to make efficiency improvements in current programs, reduce childhood obesity, and increase the federal meal reimbursement rate.

You’ve got one month until recess, Congress. Get crackin’! Class dismissed.

Improving Nutrition for America’s Children Act has PASSED in the House!

Fat kids are hard to kidnap.  That’s about the only advantage there is for having your kid be huge.   And since kidnapping can be deterred in other ways, we can all agree that childhood obesity is not a crime-fighting weapon, but rather a detriment to society as a whole. So what’s our weapon? Healthy eating in schools.

After holding my breath since June 10th, today I am proud to say that a MONUMENTAL bill has passed in the House of Representatives.  H.R. 5504 “Improving Nutrition for America’s Children Act” was passed yesterday, and parents across the country are saying: “It’s about TIME.” This is a huge milestone in the promotion of healthy eating in the nation’s schools, as part of the war on childhood obesity (not-so-fun-fact: one out of five children are obese!  Next step is getting it approved in the Senate…

If this is news to you, then let me give you an overview of how fantastically awesome the bill is:

Summary: Amends the Richard B. Russell National School Lunch Act and the Child Nutrition Act of 1966 to revise the school lunch and breakfast programs, the summer food service program, the child and adult care food program (CACFP), and the special supplemental nutrition program for women, infants, and children (WIC program). Reauthorizes appropriations for such programs through FY2015. Includes among such revisions:
(1) encouraging the direct certification of children who receive other public assistance as eligible for free meals under the school lunch and breakfast programs;
(2) establishing new mechanisms by which schools or local educational agencies (LEAs) with very high proportions of low-income children can receive federal reimbursement for free or reduced price meals under such programs without collecting individual paper applications from households;
(3) establishing a program awarding competitive grants to states and, through them, competitive subgrants to LEAs to establish or expand the school breakfast program at low-income schools;
(4) expanding the access of low-income rural areas to the summer food service program;
(5) requiring updates to meal patterns and nutrition standards for the school lunch and breakfast programs based on recommendations made by the Food and Nutrition Board of the National Research Council of the National Academy of Sciences (NAS);
(6) requiring the establishment of science-based nutrition standards for all foods sold in schools outside the school lunch and breakfast programs;
(7) requiring LEAs participating in the school lunch and breakfast programs to establish local school wellness policies for their schools that include goals for nutrition promotion and education, physical activity and education, and other school-based activities that promote student wellness;
(8) requiring reimbursable meals and snacks provided under the CACFP to meet the most recent Dietary Guidelines for Americans and certain authoritative scientific recommendations;
(9) encouraging WIC program participants to breastfeed; and
(10) requiring WIC electronic benefit transfer (EBT) systems to be implemented nationwide by October 1, 2020.

Right here we have a trifecta of health, affordability, and efficiency to combat the current trifecta: few healthy options, low-income families, and inefficient bureaucracy. Sponsored by Rep. George Miller (D-CA), this bill is accordance with Michelle Obama’s mission of ending childhood obesity.

So what comes next? Implementation! Schools now have their work cut out for them.  It starts with baby steps: setting goals in regards to nutrition and physical activity programs, replacing junk food vending machines with healthier options, and competing for grants with other schools.  Revamping their school lunch program will be no easy task, but the clock is ticking as waistlines steadily expand.

Junk Food: It’s To Die For!

If you asked the average person what the biggest threat is to their country, their family, or their community, what do you think they’d say? Pollution? Economic conditions? Crime? I say nay, good citizen. Your enemy is the insidious JUNK FOOD that lurks in your pantry, your convenience store, and your vending machines.

The junk food industry probably has some nice people in it.  But they are definitely doing some not nice things.  Let’s air their dirty laundry now!

  1. The junk food industry deliberately targets kids as young as two years old in order to create brand preference and lifelong loyalty.
  2. Fast food chains lure kids with free toys in their meals to get their parents to spend.
  3. Flavorings and colorings can cause rashes, asthma, and hyperactivity.
  4. Many children now prefer man-made flavors over real food!
  5. The average kid in the U.S. sees 25 hours of TV, which equates to 20,000 junk food ads a year! That’s a lot of brainwashing…
  6. 20% of kids under the age of two are given soft drinks by their parents! When my nephew was two, he did not need Mountain Dew. He needed to be shot with a tranquilizer dart.
  7. The average can of cola has 10 teaspoons of sugar. Picture that.
  8. Over 90% of children eat McDonalds at least once per month.
  9. American teenagers drink, on average, over 760 cans of soda per year!

Drum roll please……

And the TENTH junk food fact that is off-the-wall-ridiculous:

10.  The average person day consumes more sugar in TWO WEEKS than a person a century ago would consume in a whole YEAR.

I know. I know. It blew my mind as well.  Somehow people 100 years ago still survived their workday without draining over TWO cans (20 teaspoons, as we now know) of sugary crap drink.

Now that I’ve opened your eyes to the deadly advertising all around you and your children, I bet you’re going to retreat into the wilderness to hide.  Fear not! We can counter this marketing movement of junk food advertising and consumption with responsible eating habits and educating kids to not believe the stupid commercials they see.
